Clotrimazole Prescription

Clotrimazole 500mg pessary contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, which is an antifungal drug prescribed to treat infections with fungi and yeasts. Clotrimazole pessary is a single dose treatment for vaginal thrush.

Vaginal thrush is the common term for infections of the vagina with Candida species of fungi, in particular Candida albicans. This infection causes inflammation and discharge from the vagina.

Clotrimazole kills the Candida fungi causing the infection by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disruption in production of ergosterol causes holes to appear in the fungal cell membrane.

The cell membranes of fungi are vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances from entering the cells and stop the contents of the cells from leaking out. As clotrimazole causes holes to appear in the cell membranes, essential constituents of the fungal cells can leak out. This kills the fungi and treats the infection.

Clotrimazole 500mg pessary is inserted high into the vagina to allow the clotrimazole to act directly in the area of infection. The pessary should be inserted into the vagina at bedtime using the applicator provided.

The single dose pessary should clear up the infection inside the vagina. However, you may also want to use a cream on the outside of the vagina to help relieve the external symptoms of the infection, such as itching, inflammation and soreness. Clotrimazole 1% or 2% cream are suitable for this. See the end of this factsheet for available products.

Why is Clotrimazole prescribed?

- Inflammation of the vagina caused by infection with Candida albicans or other yeasts.

Clotrimazole, the active ingredient in these drugs, is prescribed to treat fungal infections. In drugs for the skin, it is effective against ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch. In vaginal creams and tablets, Clotrimazole is prescribed against vaginal yeast infections. In lozenge form, Clotrimazole is prescribed to treat oral yeast infections and to prevent them in people with weak immune systems.

Keep using Clotrimazole for the full time of treatment, even if the infection seems to have disappeared. If you stop too soon, the infection could return. You should continue using the vaginal forms of Clotrimazole even during your menstrual period.

Keep all forms of Clotrimazole away from your eyes.

Before applying the skin drugs, be sure to wash your hands. Massage the drug gently into the affected area and the surrounding skin.

If you are taking Mycelex troches, place the lozenge in your mouth and let it dissolve slowly for 15 to 30 minutes. Do not chew the lozenge or swallow it whole.

If you are using a vaginal cream or tablet, use the following administration technique:
- Gently insert the applicator high into the vagina and push the plunger;
- Lie on your back with your knees drawn up;
- Load the applicator to the fill line with cream or unwrap a tablet wet it with warm water and place it in the applicator as shown in the instructions you receive with the product;
- Withdraw the applicator and discard it if disposable or wash with soap and water;

To keep the vaginal drug from getting on your clothing, wear a sanitary napkin. Do not use a tampon because it will absorb the drug. Wear underwear or pantyhose with a cotton crotch--avoid synthetic fabrics such as nylon or rayon. Do not douche unless your doctor tells you to do so.
