Feldene, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is used to relieve the inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is prescribed both for sudden flare-ups and for long-term treatment.
Feldene capsules, Feldene melt tablets and Feldene injection all contain the active ingredient Feldene, which is a type of drug called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. NSAIDs are used to relieve pain and inflammation. Feldene is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic drug.
Feldene works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced by the body in response to injury and certain diseases and conditions, and cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Feldene blocks the production of these prostaglandins and is therefore effective at reducing inflammation and pain.
Feldene is used to relieve pain and inflammation in a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including various forms of arthritis, gout and muscle sprains and strains. It is also used to relieve pain and inflammation following orthopaedic, dental and other minor surgery.
Feldene has a prolonged duration of action which means that one dose can provide pain relief throughout the day. You should try and take your dose at the same time each day.
Feldene capsules should be swallowed with a drink. Feldene melt tablets are designed to dissolve quickly on the tongue and be swallowed with your saliva. These are convenient to take if you don't have a drink handy. They can also be swallowed whole with a drink. Both dose forms should preferably be taken with food to help reduce irritation to the stomach.
Feldene injection may be given for the initial relief of pain, but you will be switched onto oral treatment as soon as possible. The injection is given into the muscle of the buttock.
Why is this drug prescribed?
In adults, relief of pain and inflammation in a variety of conditions, including the following:
- a form of arthritis affecting the joints of the spine;
- acute disorders of the muscles and skeleton such as sprains and strains;
- acute gout;
- osteoarthritis;
- pain and inflammation following orthopaedic dental and other minor surgery.;
- rheumatoid arthritis;
- vomiting;
- vertigo;
- stomach upset;
- stomach ulcers or bleeding;
- sleepiness;
- ringing in ears;
- rash;
- nausea;
- loss of appetite;
- kidney problems;
- itching;
- heartburn;
- headache;
- general feeling of ill health;
- gas;
- fluid retention;
- dizziness;
- diarrhea;
- constipation;
- anemia;
- ulceration of the stomach or intestines;
- sleepiness;
- skin reactions such as rash or itching;
- sensation of ringing or other noise in the ears;
- retention of water in the body tissues resulting in swelling;
- loss of appetite;
- kidney liver or blood disorders;
- headache;
- excess gas in the stomach and intestines;
- dizziness;
- disturbances of the gut such as indigestion diarrhoea constipation nausea vomiting or abdominal pain;
- difficulty sleeping;
- depression;
- confusion;
- blurred vision;
- bleeding from the stomach or intestines;
- balance disorders involving the inner ear;
- allergic reactions such as severe skin rashes swelling of the lips tongue and throat or narrowing of the airways;
- abnormal reaction of the skin to light usually a rash;
- abdominal pain or discomfort;
ADULTS
Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis:
The usual dose is 20 mg a day in one dose. Your doctor may want you to divide this dose into smaller ones. You will not feel Feldene's full effects for 7 to 12 days, although some relief of symptoms will start to occur soon after you take the medication.
CHILDREN
The safety and effectiveness of Feldene have not been established in children.
