Hytrin Indications

Hytrin tablets contain the active ingredient Hytrin, which is a type of drug called an alpha-blocker. Hytrin is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic drug. Hytrin has two quite different uses. It works by blocking alpha receptors in certain areas of the body.

Alpha receptors are found on the muscle in the prostate gland. This gland is found only in men and lies at the top of the tube connecting the bladder to the outside. The prostate gland often enlarges with advancing age and presses on the urethra. This can cause symptoms such as difficulty passing urine. By blocking the alpha receptors in the prostate gland, Hytrin causes the muscle in the prostate to relax. This allows urine to flow freely past the prostate and relieves the urinary symptoms of this condition.

Alpha receptors are also found in the muscle in the walls of blood vessels. By blocking these receptors, Hytrin causes the muscle to relax and allows the blood vessels to widen. This lets the blood pass more easily through the blood vessels and hence reduces blood pressure. Hytrin can therefore be prescribed to treat high blood pressure.

Why is Hytrin prescribed?

- mild to moderate high blood pressure;

Hytrin is prescribed to reduce high blood pressure. It may be prescribed alone or in combination with other blood pressure lowering drugs, such as HydroDIURIL or Inderal, a beta blocker.

Hytrin is also prescribed to relieve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. BPH is an enlargement of the prostate gland that surrounds the urinary canal. It leads to the following symptoms:
- a weak or interrupted stream when urinating;
- a need to urinate often especially at night;
- a feeling that you must urinate right away;
- a feeling that you cannot empty your bladder completely;
- a feeling of delay when you start to urinate;

Hytrin relaxes the tightness of a certain type of muscle in the prostate and at the opening of the bladder. This can reduce the severity of the symptoms.

Hytrin Side Effects

- a drop in blood pressure that occurs when going from lying down to sitting or standing which results in dizziness and lightheadedness;
- difficult or labored breathing;

Hytrin Dosage

ADULTS

High Blood Pressure

The usual initial dose is 1 mg at bedtime. Your doctor may slowly increase the dose until your blood pressure has been lowered sufficiently. The usual recommended dosage range is 1 mg to 5 mg taken once a day; however, some people may benefit from doses as high as 20 mg per day.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

The starting dose is 1 mg at bedtime. Your doctor will gradually increase the dose to 10 mg, taken once a day, usually for at least 4 to 6 weeks. A few men have needed a dose of 20 mg a day.

If you stop taking Hytrin for several days or longer, your doctor will re-start your treatment with 1 mg at bedtime.
