Metformin Indications
Metformin is indicated to help control blood glucose levels in persons with type 2 diabetes by reducing glucose production in the liver and increasing sensitivity to existing insulin. It is not a replacement for injected insulin and is not used in treating type 1 diabetes. It is often used in combination with other medications as part of regimen that includes recommendations for weight loss and decreased caloric intake.
Because no two people with sugar diabetes are alike, treatment is carefully chosen to meet the needs of the individual person. Metformin can be used on its own along with a diet, or used in combination with other antidiabetic medicines.
Insulin is made naturally in the pancreas. It maintains the correct amount of sugar in the blood. If the body does not make enough insulin to meet its needs, or does not properly use the insulin it makes, this results in the condition called diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes).
Metformin allows the body to make better use of the lower amount of insulin that occurs in sugar diabetes.
Metformin is indicated in treating polycystic ovary syndrome.
Metformin is indicated or use as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adult patients (18 years and older) with type 2 diabetes.
